The concept behind this piece is inspired by how mental health can be affected by nature. By simply being outside among the natural world and absorbing the colour and surroundings.
Going through anxiety and depression nature can be an escapism just being among the trees, flowers, and fields. Yet, if there was a time that I simply couldn’t get outside just drawing flowers and insects in a journal helped realise anxiety, even if it was ever so slightly.
Within the journal I would draw a basic shape of the human heart as a base and use flowers, vines, and leaves to express emotions felt during the day and in that current moment in time, relating it to nature and colours within it. Within time a hobby of taking images of the flowers and insects developed.
Mixed-media techniques was used to create this 3D textile art piece, of hand painting with acrylic, hand-guided machine embroidery, couching and beading techniques. One element within my piece is the use of bio-textiles, creating bio-coffee leather and bio plastic to create extra detailing to couch onto the cotton canvas base.
